Abstract.
The article deals with the topic of studying professional vocabulary, which is on the periphery of the language and has a limited area of use. Having analysed the material of the German language, the authors come to the conclusion that throughout the centuries-old historical development of the lexis of the national German language, professional vocabulary was one of the permanent sources of its enrichment, manifested in almost continuous replenishment of it with new words and expressions that represent specific peculiarities of various industrial spheres, crafts, trades and other kinds of human activity.
