IMAGE OF LONDON IN NEIL GAIMAN’S NOVEL “NEVERWHERE”

Abstract.
The article provides a comprehensive analysis of London’s image in Neil Gaiman’s novel, which is formed through the reception of personages and the narrator. The study focuses on analysing the evolution of London’s image in the consciousness of the main character - Richard Mayhew. The spatial arrangement of the text (division into Upper and Lower London) suits the character’s ambiguous vision of the city. London’s image goes beyond the framework of a sociocultural and historical object, mythologizes and becomes a prototype of “eternal city”. The accent on particular topos is conditioned by the novel’s genre nature. Toponyms contribute greatly to the arrangement of artistic space. The storyline is based on the detective intrigue and is associated with the journey motif.
