Abstract. In the article, the influence of the writer of the XIX century Richard Jefferies on the works by the British literary critic and author of non-fiction prose Edward Thomas, who became a poet during the First World War, is analysed. The author considers common to the both writers views on nature and a human’s place in it, which can be called “mystical agnosticism”: despite the disbelief of both the men in the supernatural, nature was a source of spiritual revelations for them; both the writers saw the reflection of the whole long history of the interaction of a human being and nature in the rural landscape. It is shown how the continuity of the views of these two authors is expressed in their works.
