GERMANISMS AS A SOURCE FOR REPLENISHING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE VOCABULARY

Abstract. The article deals with the phenomenon of lexical borrowing as one of the ways to replenish the vocabulary of a language. In the course of the study conducted by the material of the modern English-language press, the authors consider the main characteristics of the borrowing process, identify the extra-linguistic factors that led to the emergence of the German and English speakers’ intercultural contacts, examine the specificity of Germanisms assimilation and functioning in English and reveal similarities in these processes in the contacting languages.
