Abstract.
The article deals with the problem of violence and cruelty manifestation in the modern world by the material of Joyce Carol Oates’s creative work. The author reveals that environment affects human behaviour. The paper notes that the identification of the features of the writer’s vision of human behaviour in the surrounding society expands modern ideas both about Joyce Carol Oates’s creative work and the causes of changes in the social system, the causes of violence and cruelty manifestation. For the study, the author uses psychological, comparative-historical, socio-cultural methods by the material of the collection “Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque” by Joyce Carol Oates.
