Abstract.
The article attempts to comprehend the events of the First World War through the lenses of the perception of the great writers of the XX century: Remarque, Aldington, Hemingway, Faulkner. The common themes for all the selected novels are war, soldier, enemy, guilt, causes of war, “lost generation”. However, each writer speaks about the war in his own language, using the original manner of narration. The writers, independently from each other, create a new socio-psychological type of a hero-soldier of the First World War. The authors present a generalizing artistic portrait of a warrior compiled on the basis of the analysed novels.
