RETROSPECTION IN HENRY ARTHUR JONES’S DRAMA

Abstract.
The article deals with the device of retrospection in the context of the “new drama” genre formation in England at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. By the example of Henry Arthur Jones’s plays “Saints and Sinners”, “Mrs. Dane’s Defence”, for the first time translated into Russian by the author of the presented work and introduced into scientific use, it is shown how the device of retrospection is realized at different levels of the dramatic work: composition, plot, conflict, and descriptive-expressive means. H. A. Jones uses retrospection as a basis for the construction of plays, as well as a content aspect related to the central theme of the works.
