IMAGE OF LONDON IN DETECTIVE STORIES BY ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE AND ITS RENDERING IN THE RUSSIAN TRANSLATIONS BY N. K. AND M. N. CHUKOVSKYS

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of London’s image in A. K. Doyle’s detective stories and the rendering of the main characteristics of the city in N. K. and M. N. Chukovskys’ translations. Avoiding the detailed descriptions of urban space, Doyle introduces the image of a mysterious city. The paper discusses the most representative descriptions of London, their interpretation in the Russian translations. For the first time the author analyses the problem of London’s image perception and its rendering in N. K. and M. N. Chukovskys’ translations published by “Detgiz” (Soviet and Russian publishing house for children’s literature). The focus of the work is on the choice of the Soviet translators’ strategies, as well as their assessment of London as a centre of social contradictions.
