Abstract. Negation is an inherent feature of language and a universal linguistic category. The studies in this sphere are very important and relevant because the incorrect use of negation in the communicative process can influence the semantics of the whole sentence. The article considers the essence of linguistic negation, identifies the means to express it in the language and provides comparative analysis of linguistic means expressing negation in the Bashkir, Russian and English languages. By the material of literary translation the authors examine the peculiarities of this linguistic category functioning.
