Abstract. The article analyses the specificity of the poetical figurativeness of religious content in the Japanese translations of the Book of Psalter and identifies the peculiarities of its rendering by means of the Japanese language. The author shows how biblical figurativeness is connected with religious discourse and provides commentary on the influence of the Japanese traditional religious and philosophical doctrines on the translation and perception of psalmic texts. The article presents the most frequent semantic categories, images of religious content and tropes used to transfer them. The paper concludes on the efficiency of rendering the original meaning.
