SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS OF OPPOSITION IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE OF THE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE MASS MEDIA IN CHINA

Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the semantics and pragmatics of opposition in the political discourse of the English-language mass media in China. It is shown that the category of opposition represents historically and culturally determined duality of the Chinese thinking. The category of opposition, being a feature of the Chinese speech culture, manifests itself both in the English-language and the Chinese-language political discourse. To explicate oppositions at verbal, cognitive and cognitive-cultural levels, the author analyses meaningful aspects of the English-language political discourse in China, examines thematic content as well as structural and textual organization of this type of discourse.
