Abstract.
The article covers the basic problems concerning the status of phrasal verbs in the modern English language: terminology, inner structure, approaches to defining the second element. The author provides a list of criteria that help learners to identify phrasal verbs in speech taking into account the fact that the second element of a phrasal verb sounds like a preposition or a particle. The paper offers the author’s original approach to classifying phrasal verbs, which includes the semantic analysis of the meanings of the most frequent particles.
