Communicative Purposes of Taboos Violation in the German Electronic Media Texts with Elements of Satire

Abstract. Relying on a linguistic analysis of modern texts with elements of political satire from the German mass media, the paper shows that violation of verbal taboos is typical of the politainment genre. The author identifies the basic communicative purpose of explicating tabooed lexical units and meanings: to indicate affiliation to the political satire genre rooted in the culture of the language, to attract and hold readers’ attention. The research material includes the modern German publicistic texts of the infotainment genre.
