Motive of Silence in the Novel “February Shadows” by E. Reichart

Abstract. The article examines the functioning of the silence motive in the novel “February Shadows” by the modern Austrian authoress Elisabeth Reichart. It is shown that the silence motive is represented in the novel at different levels - at the conceptual level as a typical feature of the Austrian mentality of the second half of the XX century (ontological silence) and at the storyline level as the personages’ communicative and behavioural strategy. The findings have allowed the researcher to reveal the peculiarities of the author’s individual style. The study resulted in identifying the basic conceptual themes, which formed the meaningful structure of the silence motive in the novel (oblivion, loneliness, guilt, protest, communicative failure, etc.).
