Morphological Peculiarities of Units with Variational Vocalization of -ed in the Modern English Language

Abstract.
The article examines variability of participles and (participial) adjectives ending in -ed with full and partial vocalization of -ed, traces their origin and historical development, identifies their morphological peculiarities in the modern English language. Relying on the lexicographical approach, the author analyses the process of their separation from the verbal paradigm and adjectivization. For the first time, the paper provides a full list of units with variational vocalization of -ed and clarifies the role of phonetic criterion in ascertaining morphological affiliation of these units.
