Verbs Actualising Semantics of Doubt Modality in Texts of the English-Language Publicistic Discourse

Abstract.
The article examines specifics of actualising doubt modality by verbs in texts of publicistic discourse. Doubt modality is presented as a text category with the general meaning of uncertainty. The study showed that actualisation of this meaning occurs under the influence of context, within the boundaries of a text as a whole maintained by interaction of means belonging to different linguistic levels. And the verbs whose semantic structure registers the meaning of uncertainty as a secondary meaning or non-existent one are able to exhibit doubt modality acting as direct and indirect means of expressing this semantics. The study is novel in that it ascertains dependency of explicit or implicit expression of doubt modality by verbs on syntactic structures of corresponding utterances.
