Linguistic Means to Form Identity (by the Material of the French Language)

Abstract. The paper aims to identify the basic linguistic means to form identity. The identity formation process is considered in three aspects: from the viewpoint of social, discursive and textological approaches. Scientific originality of the study involves the discourse analysis approach borrowed from social geography and based on E. Relph’s conception of “seven modes of insideness and outsideness”. Analysing the French expatriates’ statements, the author concludes that experience of insideness or outsideness constitutes the basis of social identity and acquires its linguistic manifestation in discursive practices.
