Functional-Semantic Approach Existence in Linguistics: Systematic Review

Abstract.
This article is a systematic review of the Russian and foreign schools of thought studying semantics and functions of linguistic units that convey a particular meaning. The work aims to provide a detailed historical insight into formation and development of the functional-semantic approach in linguistics. Scientific novelty of the conducted research lies in identifying a number of significant stages in development of the functional-semantic approach in linguistics. The attained results have shown that the functional-semantic approach is a relevant trend in linguistics at the moment; in addition to this, the author substantiates a potential trend in development of the functional-semantic approach, consisting in the necessity to take into account not only linguistic but also extralinguistic factors, which would make the research more complete and comprehensive.
