Abstract.
This article examines functioning of language means in J. R. R. Tolkien’s creative work. The research aims to substantiate linguistic nature of the writer’s works through an analysis of the texts’ language characteristics, using the novella “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again”, the novel “The Lord of the Rings” and the cycle “The Silmarillion” as examples. Scientific novelty of the research lies in considering the author’s creative heritage through the lens of philosophy of language represented by O. Barfield’s and G. Deleuze’s ideas. The result of the research amounts to defining aesthetic, accumulative, nominative and mythmaking functions of the language as a basis of Tolkien’s creative efforts, the purpose of which was to reconstruct the English mythology.
