“The Pillow Book” by Sei Shōnagon and “Hopscotch” by Julio Cortázar: Genre Peculiarities

Abstract.
The paper provides a comparative structural analysis of Sei Shōnagon’s zuihitsu “The Pillow Book” and Julio Cortázar’s novel “Hopscotch” through the lens of Umberto Eco’s “open text” conception. Scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that the structure of these literary works has not been previously investigated in this aspect. The conclusion is made that the works under study have a similar structure but belong to different “open text” types, which influences the choice of cohesive devices and an “author - reader” interaction model (“chorus” with Sei Shōnagon and “game” with Julio Cortázar).
