Recontextualisation of the Detective: Transforming H. Poirot’s Image in S. Hannah’s Novel “The Monogram Murders”

Abstract. The study aims to shed light on certain features of recontextualisation of Hercule Poirot’s image, using Sophie Hannah’s continuation novel “The Monogram Murders” as an example. The article considers typical features of Hercule Poirot’s image and its transformation. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time in the Russian literature, the researcher analyses S. Hannah’s novel and illustrates the process of transformation of a classic mass culture image (Hercule Poirot) in modern context, which is thought of as “recontextualisation”. The attained results have shown that H. Poirot’s image becomes even more schematic than in the original and is overshadowed by the “humanised” image of an “assistant to the great detective” in S. Hannah’s work.
