Hidden Ekphrasis in D. G. Rossetti’s “The Portrait”: Possibility of Intersemiotic Translation

Abstract.
The paper aims to present the semiotic mechanisms of realization of the concept “hidden ekphrasis” on the material of a literary work. The symbolic-semiotic analysis of D. G. Rossetti’s poem “The Portrait” has been carried out: discrete-verbal and figurative-imaginative signs realized within different sign systems of one work have been considered. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it carries out the complex analysis of the concept “hidden ekphrasis” and identifies the variants of “translating” the signs that belong to different semiotic systems (verbal and iconic-imaginative) for the first time. As a result of the poetic text analysis, mechanisms of figurative-verbal transformations have been revealed: signs (verbal or iconic) which perform the function of replacing the image play the dominant role in the creation of ekphrastic description.
