Abstract. The research aims to analyse the attempt to update the genre and language of a literary work made by Michel Butor in “Description of San Marco”. The paper examines three linguistic and stylistic levels, three textual blocks of this work: the author’s comments; a collage made of many quotations from the Holy Scripture and books by European classics; fragments of utterances and phrases of a multilingual crowd of tourists. The research is original in that it is the first to formulate the main genre features of “Description of San Marco”. The research findings indicate that M. Butor’s attempt to update the form and language of a literary work leads to the blurring of boundaries of its genre.
