Semantics of Expressive Ethnonyms in Spain and Great Britain: A Historical Factor

Abstract.
The research aims to identify the features of expressive ethnic naming in the Pyrenean national variant of the Spanish language and in British English. Using the example of the two languages, the paper analyses images associated both with denotation of other nationalities and with naming of residents from different regions of the same country by each other. Scientific novelty of the research lies in analysing the influence of extralinguistic factors, primarily a historical factor, on the development of the semantics of expressive ethnonyms in both countries; similar and distinctive historical and political grounds for expressive ethnic naming are being identified. The research findings show that in the case of naming by others, expressive ethnonyms, as a rule, have a negative connotation in both languages or are used in ironic contexts.
