Abstract.
The study aims to determine the role of metaphor in creating the effect/illusion of credibility of fantastic images in Stephen King’s short story “Uncle Otto’s Truck”. The paper identifies and analyses the metaphors containing a component of the “Machine” semantic field in a story with fantastic assumption; it is shown how a fantastic image changes in the reader’s mind and how metaphors mark the stages of suspense enhancement to keep the audience’s attention. Scientific novelty is accounted for by the nature of the linguistic analysis undertaken (stylistic analysis involving general textual, semantic and comparative translation methods) in order to consider the effectiveness of using metaphors to create more credible images in short stories with a fantastic plot. As a result of the study, three dominant types of metaphor have been identified: animalistic, anthropomorphic and machine, which are used to endow inanimate objects with the characteristics of living beings. It has been concluded that animalistic and anthropomorphic metaphors can be an effective means of enhancing suspense and creating credibility in stories with fantastic assumption.
