Abstract.
The aim of this research is to identify the emergence and development of the theme of the Arab East in the works of poets from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as V. Solovyov, D. Merezhkovsky, A. Bely, and M. Voloshin. The scientific novelty of the problem is determined by comparing the theme of the Arab East in the works of writers from different poetic "camps," which, for the first time, allows us to consider not only the origin of this theme in the work of V. Solovyov, but also its development in the poetry of the symbolist D. Merezhkovsky, the younger symbolist A. Bely, and the representative of "non-literary schools," M. Voloshin. The obtained results showed that the attitude towards this theme among different poets at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was similar, due to the discovery of images of the Arab East in the work of V. Solovyov, from whom Silver Age authors drew inspiration, focusing on the same images, ideas, motifs, and developing them in accordance with their artistic tasks. Thus, D. Merezhkovsky's position as the founder of Russian symbolism influenced the attention to V. Solovyov's "Three Encounters" by other contemporary poets, either continuing or rejecting the symbolist creative method. The most recognizable image of the Arab East becomes the image of the desert, to which M. Voloshin and A. Bely dedicate eponymous poems. And while the former mystifies the image of the desert itself, focusing on its external transformation, the latter turns to conveying the lyrical hero's state of anticipation of meeting with the Wisdom of God, preached by V. Solovyov.
