Postcolonial response in fiction: Prerequisites for emergence and linguistic features

Abstract.
In the second half of the 20th century, a genre modification of the postcolonial response to the colonial discourse took shape within postcolonial fiction, incorporating the main features of historiographic metafiction. The purpose of the research is to identify the linguistic means used in the interpretation of colonial discourse by postcolonial authors who generate a postcolonial response in fiction. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time, with the help of lexical-semantic and linguostylistic analysis, it is possible to trace the transformation of secondary marginalized characters of colonial fiction into the main characters of works that are a postcolonial response to colonial discourse. The results obtained showed how lexical means and stylistic devices participate in the stereotyping and dehumanization of the image of Bertha Antoinette Rochester in “Jane Eyre” by Ch. Brontë, which leads to a change in connotations in the dichotomy “colony – metropolis” in the postcolonial response by J. Rhys “Wide Sargasso Sea”, where the first member of the dichotomy acquires a positive pragmatic charge, and the second – a negative one. In addition, the hierarchical relations between Robinson Crusoe and Friday in D. Defoe’s novel, personifying the opposition “colonizer – colony”, are strengthened in J. M. Coetzee’s postcolonial response “Foe” by introducing new characters, as well as targeted coverage of postmodern issues through linguistic means and techniques.
