Pragmatic means of implementing a self-defense strategy: an analysis of illocutionary acts in Olaf Scholz's Speech

Abstract. This research aims to identify the illocutionary acts implemented in the speech of the Federal Chancellor to defend adopted political decisions, neutralize criticism, and strengthen a positive image, in accordance with the author's developed definition of a self-defense strategy as a proactive component of a broader political strategy aimed at mobilizing the electorate and achieving long-term political goals. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, the pragmatic means of implementing a self-defense strategy in Olaf Scholz's speech behavior in the context of an initiated vote of confidence are identified, which has not previously been the subject of detailed study. The research has revealed that the dominant type of illocutionary acts used by Olaf Scholz to implement a self-defense strategy in a situation of an initiated vote of confidence are representatives. Stylistic devices that enhance or weaken the illocutionary force of representatives in the implementation of self-defense in the Chancellor's speech have been identified. It has been established that the Chancellor's self-defense strategy has demonstrated its effectiveness in the short term. The failure of the Chancellor's self-defense in the long term has been recorded. The factors that determined the ineffectiveness of the Chancellor's self-defense strategy in the long term have been identified. A hypothesis about the potential unintended perlocutionary effect of the Chancellor's speech has been formulated, the verification of which requires further research.
