Inscribed space: the semiotic significance of cities in Evgeny Vodolazkin's novel "Chagin"

Abstract.
The aim of this research is to identify, based on Yuri Lotman's semiotic theory, the mechanisms of influence of urban symbolism on the formation of historical memory, state power, and individual identity in Evgeny Vodolazkin's novel "Chagin". The scientific originality of the work lies in the fact that the symbolic functions of urban space in Vodolazkin's work are systematically revealed for the first time in light of the cultural transformations of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. Particular attention is paid to the semantic opposition of centralized cities (St. Petersburg, Moscow, London) and peripheral spaces (Irkutsk, Yalta, Totma), which allows us to consider them not only as the background for artistic events, but also as a significant factor determining the fates of the characters. As a result of the research, it is proven that the spatial symbolism of cities in the novel "Chagin", continuing the traditions of Russian literature, reinterprets the role of the city, turning it into an active element of socio-cultural and historical-psychological dynamics, capable of forming and controlling the memory and identity of the individual. This study expands the scope of the study of "urban text" and offers a new perspective on the spatial writing of post-Soviet literature.
