Emotive functions of color terms in M. A. Voloshin’s landscape sketches

Abstract.
The research aims to identify the emotive functions of color vocabulary in M. Voloshin’s landscape poetic sketches, which depict the Crimean land in watercolors and inscriptions accompanying them. The scientific novelty of the study lies in its examination, for the first time using M. A. Voloshin’s landscape poetry, of the composition of color terms in the poet’s texts, identifying their dominants, determining thematic groups, and establishing, through an experiment, the associative connections elicited in readers by the combination of color terms and emotives in the poet’s texts. It is noted that color terms, expressed through grammatical forms of adjectives (including compound adjectives), nouns, and verbs, can be direct color names or metaphors with color meaning, which are often combined in the text with various names of feelings and, in conjunction with them, perform an emotive function. The work presents an associative-semantic experiment, conducted for the first time among philology students to identify the associative connection between names of colors and emotions in M. Voloshin’s poetic lines among the respondents. The results of the textual analysis of miniatures and the experiment confirmed the significant role of color terms in conveying emotive information in the poet’s verse landscapes.
