Abstract.
Within the framework of a cognitive-pragmatic approach, this study investigates metaphors that nominate a similar subject area but have different sources of meaning transfer, specifically the artifactual metaphors "ядерный щит" / "nuclear shield" / "bouclier nucléaire" and "ядерный зонтик" / "nuclear umbrella" / "parapluie nucléaire", which are relevant for representing the current state of the global community (security, protection from nuclear attack). The aim of this scholarly work is to substantiate the shade-connotative potential of synonymous sources of transfer. Contextual examples of the use of security and protection metaphors in Russian, English, and French socio-political texts are examined, the characteristics of concepts verbalized through metaphors are identified, and evaluative connotations are shown. The scientific novelty of the research lies in emphasizing the role of nuances and connotations in choosing the basis of metaphorical reinterpretation, followed by an analysis of their influence on the characteristics of the formed metaphorical concept. As a result, the dependencies of the meaning of the metaphorical value on the choice of the source are shown, contextual examples of metaphors are analyzed, and the meaning-creating role of metaphor associated with synonymy is substantiated.
