Abstract.
The aim of this research is to determine the place and role of the lexeme “pučči”, meaning ‘barrel, small barrel’, in the linguistic worldview of the Karelians. The article examines the meanings of the dialectism “pučči” ‘barrel, small barrel’ in the Karelian language, the motivations for metaphorical nominations of individuals using this base, and the word-formation models that denote various types of barrels based on purpose and appearance. The dialectism “pučči” ‘barrel, small barrel’ has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive study within the context of Karelian linguoculture. The scientific novelty of the research lies in identifying the semantic and motivational principles of nomination in Karelian compounds containing the component “pučči” ‘barrel’, as well as complex names and phrases (comparative constructions) with negative connotation, relying on dictionary and folklore materials (idioms, riddles, proverbs). The research reveals that the concept of “pučči” ‘barrel’ occupies an important place in the linguistic worldview of the Karelians. A number of Karelian compound nouns derived from the lexeme “pučči” are used as nicknames and to describe a person’s appearance. Karelian is rich in idioms that emphasize an individual’s inner qualities, material wealth, and ways to escape poverty. Karelian oral folk creativity abounds with riddles that present the diversity of functions and external characteristics of barrels.
