Spatial archetypes in Z. Prilepin’s collection “Dogs and Other People”

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the features of the representation of spatial archetypes in the collection “Dogs and Other People” by Z. Prilepin. The article analyzes the archetypes of the house, forest, lake, and river, as well as symbolic images marking the archetypal topos: the circle, pine, and birch. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, the artistic space of the collection is considered from the perspective of mythopoetic interpretation. The research reveals that the spatial organization of the work is based on the binary opposition “house – forest”, which reflects the archetypal conception of the world’s categorization based on the opposition of “native” and “alien”. The archetype of the house represents a traditional semantic meaning and correlates with the idea of unity and protection. The forest, on the one hand, appears as a foreign, hostile space harboring threat and danger. The profanation of such space is marked by the motif of death. On the other hand, it is perceived as a sacred place, as evidenced by the actualization of the motif of the path, symbolizing the hero’s spiritual journey and inner development. The river and lake also function as symbolic boundaries dividing two worlds. Crossing such a boundary becomes a sign of initiation and the acquisition of ontological knowledge that determines the hero’s further existence.
