Transformation of the pact-with-the-devil plot in Daniel Keyes’s novel “Flowers for Algernon”

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the features of the transformation of the plot about the pact between a man and the devil in Daniel Keyes’s science fiction novel “Flowers for Algernon”. The article examines the scientific experiment as an analogue of the mystical and metaphysical deal with the devil in the religious-mythological plot, whereby the protagonist gains intelligence in exchange for his original identity. At the level of the motif complex, the individual-authorial concept of the work is analyzed, and similarities and differences between certain motifs of the novel and those of the invariant are identified in a comparative and contrastive manner. Special attention is given to biblical allusions and the ethical issues of scientific intervention. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, the plot of Keyes’s novel is considered typologically as a transformed variant of the pact-with-the-devil plot, preserved in the current narrative as an internal form organizing the entire artistic space of the work. It is established that in Keyes’s novel the pact-with-the-devil plot, as the structural basis of the work, receives a new artistic embodiment representing the accrual of new meanings, the actualization of contemporary issues, and the expansion of the semantic possibilities of the classical formula. Unlike classical interpretations of the archetypal plot, where the conflict unfolds on a metaphysical plane between divine and diabolical forces, Keyes transfers the action to the sphere of scientific experimentation, while preserving the full depth of religious and moral problematics, transforming key fabular motifs and deepening the psychological complexity of the situation.
