Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the early novella by the Strugatsky brothers in the context of the evolution of their creative work. The aim of the study is to identify the peculiarities of the reinterpretation of the dystopian tradition in the novella “Hard to Be a God” (1963). The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time in domestic literary studies, the genesis and development of dystopian motifs in the early prose of the Strugatsky brothers are clarified. As a result of the study, it was established, firstly, that by combining elements of political satire and philosophical novel, the novella “Hard to Be a God” is constructed for the first time in the Strugatskys’ oeuvre according to the genre model of dystopia, characterized by the idea of renunciation of freedom and recognition of total depersonalization. Secondly, the main motif in “Hard to Be a God” is the suppression of creative freedom and freedom of thought, which inevitably leads to cultural decline and social degradation. Thirdly, the narrative can be divided into two parts: a dystopia generating totalitarianism and a dystopia of triumphant totalitarianism. Fourthly, in the artistic organization of the Arkanar society, several levels can be conditionally distinguished: these are the “medieval” commoners, the fascist “gray” squads zombified by power, the Arkanar “nobility,” the persecuted “book-eaters,” and the totalitarian “blacks” who seized the state and established a dictatorship.
