Memory as the basis of the principle of two worlds in Eugene O’Neill’s play “A Touch of the Poet”

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the literary forms of representation of the principle of two worlds in close correlation with the processes of memory in the play “A Touch of the Poet” (1957) by the American playwright Eugene O’Neill. To achieve this goal, the authors of the article study various components of the dramatic text: the figurative plane (characters and symbols), intertextual connections with cultural and historical facts and works of world literature, and psychologism. Despite the significant number of works devoted to the work of the famous playwright, his inherent depth and unique style allow us to find new, previously unexplored facets of his theatrical heritage. Among the little-studied questions are the leading principles underlying most of O’Neill’s works. The principle of two worlds in connection with the writings of the American author has not been previously investigated, which determines the scientific novelty of this article. As a result of a comprehensive analysis, those elements of O’Neill’s poetics that are consonant with the desired principle of two worlds are identified and described, the connection between the analyzed artistic unit and the socio-cultural problems of the play is established, as well as the theme of memory, which constitutes the basis of the aforementioned dualism.
