The chronotope of a utopian future in V. S. Shefner’s novel “The Girl at the Cliff, or Kovrigin’s Notes”

Abstract.
The article analyzes the unique spatial-temporal organization of V. S. Shefner’s novel “The Girl at the Cliff, or Kovrigin’s Notes” – the chronotope of a utopian future. The study aims to identify the features of artistic time and space in the utopian world created by Shefner. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the chronotope of the work is considered as a multilayered model: temporal strata are identified and characterized (historical past, the conditional “present” of the narrative in the 22nd century, and several stages of future development), the role of real geographical names in constructing a convincing image of the future is revealed, and the central lyrical image of the girl at the cliff is interpreted for the first time as a chronotopic symbol of the unity of times and the continuity of human values. As a result, it was established that Shefner, working in the genre of science fiction, relies on real toponyms and a single science-fiction assumption (the discovery of “aqualide”) to model an ideal future. The multilayered chronotope of the novel unites the past, present, and future in a single utopian perspective, where the key symbol of the unity of times is the image of the girl at the cliff, embodying the continuity of moral values.
