The concept of the World of Dreams (Tel’aran’rhiod) in R. Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” series

Abstract.
The research aims to identify the principles of creation and the functions of the World of Dreams, Tel’aran’rhiod, in R. Jordan’s multi-volume novel series “The Wheel of Time”. The article examines the place of Tel’aran’rhiod in the system of multiple worlds, which forms the basis of the cosmology of the “Wheel of Time” world. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that R. Jordan’s work remains insufficiently examined both in Russian and foreign literary studies, and the writer’s name is usually only mentioned among other authors who influenced the development of the genre. For the first time in literary studies, the concept of Tel’aran’rhiod is considered in the context of the oneiric tradition and in comparison with the principles of world-building in fantasy literature. As a result, it was established that Tel’aran’rhiod is one of the most important dimensions in the cosmological model of “The Wheel of Time”, it is a reflection of the real world, and therefore everything that happens inside Tel’aran’rhiod is reflected on the dream traveler in ordinary reality. The World of Dreams allows one to interact with sleeping people who are on the other side of the world and even with the great heroes of the past who have not yet been reborn, which makes it possible to compare the World of Dreams with the otherworld. At the same time, Tel’aran’rhiod is one of the places of battles with the minions of the Dark One, which turns it into one of the key dimensions in the cosmology of “The Wheel of Time”.
