The fear-generating nature of the Russophobic discourse of English-language media

Abstract. The aim of this study is to identify the psycholinguistic mechanisms involved in the formation of existential death anxiety within the Russophobic discourse of English-language mass media. The article represents an interdisciplinary investigation that integrates tools from both linguistics and social psychology. By analyzing materials from English-language media outlets, the author explores the process of generating existential fear through the lens of key concepts such as “Russophobia”, “fear of death”, “suggestion”, and “consciousness manipulation”. The theoretical foundation of the study is Terror Management Theory, which serves as the basis for analyzing the interaction between language and psychological predispositions in the construction of existential fear in media discourse. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, psycholinguistic techniques used in Russophobic discourse to evoke existential fear have been identified and systematized. The study demonstrates how linguistic devices and discursive strategies are employed to activate deep psychological mechanisms associated with death anxiety and the perceived threat to cultural identity. The analysis is conducted through the integration of linguistic and social psychological methods, which enables a new interpretation of the content of Russophobic discourse and reveals its functional orientation as a tool for influencing public consciousness. The results of the research show that manipulative techniques and strategies in Russophobic discourse facilitate the induction and reinforcement of death anxiety. This makes the discourse a powerful instrument of consciousness manipulation and contributes to the entrenchment of anxiety-driven attitudes in the public sphere. Consequently, this influences the formation of ideologically charged perceptions of Russia and serves to legitimize politically motivated decisions on the international stage.
