Abstract.
The article examines the process of the formation of the hero-fighter in Soviet prose of the 1940s-1950s, which transmits the tradition of the Bildungsroman. The aim of the research is to identify the specific features of the hero-fighter’s formation in the novellas “The General’s Night” by G. Berezko, “Two in the Steppe” by E. Kazakevich, and “Alexey Kulikov, Fighter” by B. Gorbatov. The scientific originality lies in the fact that the process of the formation of the hero-fighter in Soviet military prose of the 1940s-1950s has been comprehensively summarized and interpreted for the first time in Russian literary studies. The research found, firstly, that the dominant factor in the formation of the hero-fighter’s personality is the reinterpretation of the attitude towards the feeling of fear, as a result of which fearlessness is mythologized and hatred of fascism is accumulated. Secondly, the tradition of the Bildungsroman, refracted in war prose, is influenced by the socialist realism canon, however, it is realized in the classical genre form. Thirdly, the type of hero-fighter formation in the war novella of the 1940s-50s is based on the stable characteristics of the socialist realist Bildungsroman: the hero-fighter, like the hero of socialist realist literature, is oriented towards the future and invariably grows towards heroism and fearlessness; the trajectory of his movement is characterized by schematism and predetermination, but the image of the hero himself undergoes a certain degree of demythologization – becoming more alive, having the right to make mistakes, and capable of showing weakness.
