Linguopoetic speech portrait of the wise old man (based on the image of the Master from the mystical film “The Psychic”)

Abstract.
The paper focuses on the linguopoetic speech portraiture of a mystical film character and identifying the means of the Russian language through which an archetypal nature is manifested in their speech. The aim of the study is to define the communicative and linguistic features of the film character’s speech – the wise old man – which correlate with and are determined by this archetype. Drawing on literary and psychoanalytic sources, the paper provides a characterization of the wise old man archetype and derives hypothetical speech characteristics expected from an elder character. Using the Russian mystical film “The Psychic” as material, a speech portrait of its protagonist, the Master, is constructed: cultural references, communicative strategies and tactics, and stylistic features are described, and the linguistic resources used are examined at various levels. The scientific novelty of the research lies in its being the first to describe the communicative activity of a character from a Russian mystical film, as well as in the linguistic examination of an archetypal image and in identifying the correlation between the character’s speech characteristics and the wise old man archetype embodied in his artistic image. As a result, it was established that the Master’s speech shows almost complete correlation with the expected archetypal speech traits in all aspects examined, which confirms the hypothesis about the influence of the archetype on the film character’s verbal behavior. Isolated deviations are related to stylization (lending naturalness and ease to remarks) and the “shadow” side of the wise old man archetype, manifested by the character during the plot’s development.
