Abstract.
The aim of the study is to establish the role of A. S. Pushkin’s novella “The Queen of Spades” as a key source for the formation of the poetics of 19th-century Russian “gambling” literature, which results in the identification of a holistic system of motifs, images, and artistic techniques that determined the development of subsequent literary tradition. The article examines the peculiarities of interpreting Pushkin’s motifs of temptation, winning and losing, fate, and the intervention of otherworldly forces in the works of M. Yu. Lermontov, N. V. Gogol, L. N. Tolstoy, F. M. Dostoevsky, V. F. Odoevsky, L. N. Andreev, and A. P. Chekhov, tracing their transformation and interrelation. The analysis demonstrates how the poetics of play, established by Pushkin, becomes a universal model for the artistic comprehension of human choice and fate in 19th-century Russian literature. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that 19th-century Russian “gambling” prose and drama are conceptualized for the first time as a unified intertextual space, united by the poetics of “The Queen of Spades”, where gamble is viewed not only as a social or everyday element but also as a universal artistic model reflecting the philosophical categories of fate, choice, and temptation. The findings revealed that “gambling” works of 19th-century Russian literature are united by a stable complex of motifs (temptation, winning and losing, fate, the fantastic) and a system of images (the gambler, the double, the femme fatale, the sharper, and animated cards), all genetically tracing back to Pushkin’s prototext. The poetics of “The Queen of Spades” serves as the foundation for an artistic tradition that ensures the unity of 19th-century Russian literature despite the diversity of its genre and stylistic manifestations.
