Methods of forming zoonymic terms in the Adyghe Nart epic

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to develop dictionary entries for zoonymic terms in the Adyghe Nart epic, revealing the structural mechanism of these names. The scholarly novelty of the study is that, for the first time, using documented folklore material, it is proven that compounding is the most ancient method of name formation in Adyghe languages. The identified complex epic terms are organized into dictionary entries, each accompanied by a structural-semantic characterization. The study considers the regularity of their usage, describes animal qualities, and establishes the reasons for their naming. The findings indicate that Adyghe folklore material is predominantly rich in names for horses, which are related to their coat color, physical characteristics (e.g., large, thin), and abilities (e.g., possessing supernatural powers). Less frequently encountered are names for other zoonyms, such as cattle, dog breeds, birds of prey (eagles), snakes, etc. The investigated zoonymic terms are predominantly formed through compounding, although the singular suffix -жьей introduces diminutive and endearing nuances into these formations.
