Adjectives meaning “costing a lot of money” in literary language and dialectal speech

Abstract.
The study aims to determine the influence of cultural, economic, and historical factors on the change in meaning of the adjective “дорогой” (meaning “expensive” or “costing a lot of money”) in literary and dialectal speech. In this work, we focused solely on the direct meaning of the word – “costing a lot of money”. The choice to analyze this lexeme in this particular meaning is not accidental: it reflects speakers’ perceptions of the value of objects across different historical periods and records socio-economic and cultural realities. An analysis of dialectal words with this meaning allows us to determine how evaluations of expensiveness were formed and established in the language. The article presents an overview of the direct and figurative meanings of the adjective “дорогой” across different periods of language development and also analyzes adjectives with the meaning “costing a lot of money” found in dialectal dictionaries. The scholarly novelty of the study lies in the fact that, for the first time, using material from explanatory and dialectal dictionaries, it presents an overview of adjectives expressing an attitude towards expensiveness, which is conditioned not only by the high cost of a product but also by its emotional value. The study found that semantic changes occurred during different periods of language development; however, in modern Russian, the word is predominantly used in its primary, direct meaning – “costing a lot of money” – which is represented by two models: “a thing that is expensive” and “a person whose services are expensive”. The results of the analysis of dialectal material allow us to assert that the appearance of a specific lexeme can be conditioned by extralinguistic factors, including economic and cultural ones.
