Syntax of power and syntax of diplomacy: expressive means of command and request in modern Russian prose

Abstract. The aim of the research is to establish the universal and individual-style features of expressive-syntactic constructions realizing command and request in dialogues of modern Russian prose, demonstrating their contribution to shaping the emotional-pragmatic impact on the addressee. The scientific novelty lies in substantiating the opposition “syntax of power / syntax of diplomacy” as two systemic ways of expressing directivity and in typologizing eight types of expressive-syntactic constructions (exclamatory construction, repetition, ellipsis, rhetorical question, parcellation, reticence, communiqueme, inversion) and their combinations, which determine the nature of emotional and volitional impact in speech. The research findings showed that command is realized predominantly through exclamatory constructions, repetition, and communiqueme, while request is realized through repetition, reticence, and ellipsis; the identified patterns reflect the individual-style differences among authors and the specific pragmatic organization of dialogue in modern Russian prose, thereby confirming the functional significance of expressive syntax in shaping a work’s communicative strategy.
