Memorial anthropotoponyms of the Volgograd region as a reflection of the people’s value orientations

Abstract.
The paper analyzes memorial anthropotoponyms of the Volgograd Region from two main periods – pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary. We define memorial anthropotoponyms as names of settlements formed from the names of individuals renowned in various spheres of human activity, which distinguishes them from patronymic ones (names formed from the names/surnames of the first settlers and founders of settlements). It is the prominence of the individual underlying memorial anthropotoponyms that makes them axiologically significant. The aim of the research is to identify the value orientations reflected in these oikonyms and their dependence on a specific historical period. The scientific novelty of the article lies in identifying the nomination motives for oikonyms in the Volgograd Region, which are then classified by their time of origin and thematic groups, as well as determining the values typical of each analyzed period. As a result of the research, a connection is established between the historical period and the value-based nomination motives of oikonyms in the Volgograd Region. Axiological characteristics of the names corresponding to each period are identified (e.g., ruler’s authority, property, patriotism, development of science and culture, and promotion of USSR ideals).
