Abstract.
The aim of the study is to trace the transformations of famous fable plots in the work of the creator of Polish children’s poetry Stanislaw Jachowicz. The article examines the plots of classic fables known from the works of Aesop, Phaedrus, La Fontaine, Lessing, and other fabulists, first adapted for children by Jachowicz in the first quarter of the 19th century. Based on the selected texts, it is analyzed how the poet evolved from paraphrasing classical narratives to independent creativity and invented a new type of children’s work – a didactic poem based on a story from childhood ending with a traditional fable moral. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the study of the process of transforming a classic fable plot into a children’s poem, as well as in identifying the common features of fables and didactic poems. The structure, character system, and moral conclusion formulated at the beginning or end of the work are compared. The results demonstrate that Jachowicz borrowed the didacticism and traditional moral of the classic fable, but simplified the language and developed the character system, stripping them of their fable-like allegory and making them more accessible to children.
