Features of lexical representation of the concept СЕМЬЯ/FAMILY in Russian and American English: a corpus-based approach

Abstract.
This study aims to identify the features of lexical representation of the concept СЕМЬЯ/FAMILY in Russian and American English based on the texts of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the Russian National Corpus. In the course of the study, with the help of collocation method the most frequent collocates of the noun “семья” / “family”, which occur in the corpora more than 100 times, were selected. The collocates were combined into thematic groups, after which a comparative analysis was conducted. The novelty of the research lies in identifying and systematizing current collocate models of the lexeme “семья” / “family” based on corpus data analysis, which allows us to determine the specificity of the lexical representation of the concept of family in modern Russian and American English. A comparative study revealed a number of significant differences. In American English, the collocations used are most often aimed at describing the family’s inner life, its possessions, and traditions. Collocations with a negative connotation describing family problems are frequent. Gender-neutral collocations are frequent when describing the family’s composition. In Russian, the collocations used describe the family’s place in the social structure, its relationship to the country’s culture and history. Collocations with a positive connotation are frequent. Collocations emphasizing gender and age characteristics are used when describing the family’s composition.
