Abstract.
The research aims to identify non-linear narrative as an innovative strategy in Alexey Salnikov’s novel “The Petrovs in and around the Flu” by demonstrating its functional effects at the levels of composition, chronotope, and character identity construction. The article analyzes the features of the text’s non-linear structure, identifying its key forms: plot fragmentation, disruptions of chronological sequence, variable focalization, the duality of the real and the fantastic, and the intertwining of narrative perspectives. Particular attention is paid to how this structure influences the depiction of characters’ inner worlds, enabling the author to more deeply reveal their psychological contradictions and multi-layered identity. The scientific originality of the research lies in considering non-linear narrative not merely as a technique for complicating plot perception, but as a method for creating a specific artistic effect where reality and fantasy are closely intertwined, forming a polysemantic text open to multiple interpretations. The analysis identified examples of non-linear elements – memories, dreams, hallucinations, and characters’ fantasies – that reveal the issues of post-Soviet society and the crisis of individual consciousness. As a result, the study found that the combined effect of these mechanisms creates polyphony and blurs the boundaries between the real and the fantastic. The article also identified stable patterns of transitions between temporal planes and focalizations, which ensure the semantic coherence of the fragmented narrative. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that non-linearity serves as a tool for constructing the characters’ multiple identities and as a source of the text’s chronotopic layering.
