Elements of the fairy-tale genre in N. S. Leskov’s “The Sealed Angel”

Abstract.
N. S. Leskov’s “The Sealed Angel” was published with the label “a Christmas story” and is classified in contemporary scholarship either as a “short story” or as a “novella”; however, on reading the text one notices many details that relate it to fairy tales. The aim of the study is to describe the plot elements and the functions of the dramatis personae in Leskov’s work, drawing on the literature on fairy tales. The scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the literary text, for the first time analyzed using V. Ya. Propp’s proposed method, demonstrated structural affinity with fairy tales. As a result of the analysis of functions, links and motivations, the appearance of characters and attributive elements, it was shown that the composition of “The Sealed Angel” resembles two-stage fairy tales, and the system of characters is similar to that found in fairy tales. The results point to the necessity of further searching for folkloric (tale) elements in Leskov’s work and of attempting to answer to what extent the writer consciously turned to the tale genre. The conducted analysis has shown that V. Ya. Propp’s methodology can be fruitful when applied to texts that are not products of oral folk creativity.
